Program Purpose


Learning Outcomes


Communicative and Linguistic Competence

French teacher candidates demonstrate advanced proficiency according to ACTFL guidelines by effectively using language to inform, persuade, narrate, and describe in articulate and coherent speech and writing.  In doing so, students become lifelong language learners who diligently rely on gifts of the Spirit to continually progress.

Intercultural Competence

French teacher candidates identify cultural practices (e.g., customs and traditions) and cultural products (e.g., literatures, arts, institutions, and individuals) from the French-speaking world and place them in their historical, political, and social contexts. They interpret the unique perspectives that they reveal in the light of the restored Gospel, cultivating humility and Christlike charity toward their fellow beings.

Teaching Competence

French teacher candidates meet the Utah Effective Teaching Standards, including the ability to: create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, plan effective standards-based lessons, teach with a variety of instructional strategies suited to the needs of their students, and assess their students' learning. They recognize the divine identities of their students to foster a sense of belonging, and they exercise Christlike virtues to teach in the Savior's way.
