Animation BFA
Program Purpose
The Animation major is intended to provide students with the skill sets necessary for success in the animation, live-action special effects, and gaming industries with emphasis on both the artistic and technological avenues. The Computer Science animation emphasis gives students the opportunity to learn both the technical and artistic side of creating and implementing digital animation and games, preparing them for technical careers with animation and game programming studios. Coursework in the program demands a sound understanding of design, composition, and storytelling and the ability to learn the current software used in the industry. Program majors are taught the fundamentals of a comprehensive art education and gain a broad perspective of the visual arts, with studies in art studio, art history, aesthetics, criticism, design, narrative construction, and visual culture.
Learning Outcomes
Artistic Development and Proficiency
Animation graduates will be able to implement fundamental design, narrative, and animation skills and will demonstrate proficiency in at least one of these areas.
Animation graduates will be able to apply problem-solving abilities in the technical processes of modeling, lighting, rigging, animation, and special effects, and will demonstrate proficiency in at least one of these areas.
Animation graduates will be able to engage in the collaborative production processes of animation and exhibit professional behavior while creating interdisciplinary creative works.
Animation graduates will be able to critically examine spiritual values and ethical issues relevant to their respective experiences in the entertainment industry.
Animation graduates will be able to implement ideas and principles from the history of animation and art in general by identifying the meaning and purpose of major works and movements within the context of their own projects.
