The faculty of the German and Russian Department wonder what kind of person you are going to be and what kind of community and world you are going to live in. Throughout the history of the department, faculty and students have explored what it means to be a thoughtful and engaged member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and how a knowledge of the German and Russian language and culture fosters that engagement. Our endeavor is driven by questions we would like you to ask yourself:

• How will the engagement with works of art and proficiency in a foreign language enable me to live a better life?
• How can I tap into foreign political, social, and religious thought, past and present?
• How will my education affect my capacity to render service in the church? How will I confront resistance to my faith?
• How will I negotiate diverse viewpoints and value systems?
• How will I recognize great art? 
• How will I deal with irony, ambiguity, joy, pain, and the tedium of day-to-day life?

German and Russian is interested in engaging you in a conversation about these and similar questions.
