Music Core Curriculum
Students in every degree in the School of Music must complete the music core curriculum, which is designed to develop fundamental and broadly applicable skills and knowledge required of every musician. The music core includes private instruction on an instrument or voice, participation in ensembles, keyboard skills, conducting fundamentals, and sequenced courses in music theory and music history.
Show eye-ear-brain coordination of musical concepts as heard and written:
- Understand structural principles of vernacular and non-vernacular music from 1600 through the present
- Understand formal principles of vernacular and non-vernacular music from 1600 through the present
- Recall and write down musical passages after hearing them
- Sing at sight musical passages from score
Demonstrate musical proficiency through:
- Ensemble participation
- Applied instruction
- Keyboard skills
Demonstrate a knowledge of musical literature and practice in culture.
