Professional Writing and Communication MIN
Program Purpose
A minor in writing and rhetoric gives students from a variety of disciplines a program of study to help them learn to use rhetoric, particularly writing, to communicate in various situations. This minor not only complements any major on campus, but also gives students practical experience, pre-professional training (particularly when it includes an internship), and certification of writing competency for a number of careers. This minor offers students the opportunity to compose texts using multiple modes (e.g., digital and visual), to learn to tutor or teach writing, and to acquire competence in critical analysis and effective communication.
Learning Outcomes
Composing and Presentational Skills in a Wide Variety of Pub
Students will apply effective communication and interpretation skills in a wide variety of genres using multiple modes of discourse to influence a variety of audiences.
Students will apply grammatical and stylistic principles to analyze, imitate, and create effective discourse in a variety of situations.
Students will explain, evaluate, and compare fundamental concepts from rhetorical theory throughout history.
Evidence of Learning
Each student will complete studies in the minor by taking English 400, a 1-credit hour course designed to help them prepare a portfolio of their writing to be used as they apply for jobs. This portfolio will also provide evidence of the learning that has taken place during the student's studies in the minor, and the rhetoric faculty will tabulate and keep record of student scores on the portfolio each term.
Learning and Teaching Assessment and Improvement
13 students completed English 400 during the 2018-19 school year
